I got the chance to record an album with a group of musicians in the band, Hallaballoo.
All new to me except for the producer/guitar/songwriter, my friend, James Gross. James and I connected through music over 20 years ago in Portland, Oregon. He has since worked to build his music world into a business up in Minneapolis, MN. Right before Christmas '23, out of the blue, James invited me to be a part of Hallaballoo's newest album as a lyricist and vocalist. I am also am performing on the electric guitar and harmonica. 13+ new songs, two months, seems reasonable. I started working on demos, pulling old lyrics from the archives, writing new ones, working on guitar parts to get ready for this thing to do my part. We had a few brainstorming sessions in MN, 2 major practice days in Minneapolis before the recording and then 4 days at the renowned Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, MN. James had a great vision for the process. Between the collaborative experience of the producers' and musicians' involved, it made for ideal working conditions. The recording process is not all fun and games. There was a lot of positive support and collaboration. Everybody had creative input and open minds going into these songs. Recording these songs at Pachyderm was an experience I will never forget. The timing is also notable because my family and I are moving to Minneapolis in July and I am excited to get back into the studio and see where the music goes. There are more stories, but for now here are some pics from Black Planet Photography for you to get a look at the recording session and meet the collaborators for Hallaballoo...
